Chapter 13: Brand

As I always liked to do, I waited for Echo outside her Summoning class. I wished I could take the course, but the Grimway counselor had told me that I was overqualified. Or something like that. I was already a summoner in every iota of my being. Sure, fire was my thing, but it sometimes got a little monotonous. I would have liked to be assigned the task of summoning other things as well.

Probably, they didn’t want me to spend my time in that class because I’d be too good at it. I had to understand that. Some people were just naturally gifted at things.

My main gift, I was pretty sure, was looking after Echo.

She was my groove.

So of course I waited for her outside her class. I liked walking the stone hallways of the school with her. It pleased me to be able to hold her hand as we made our way down the grand staircase, or up the narrow one that led to her room. When we brushed past the ancient wall tapestries, I liked to pretend that it was the two of us in the scenes together. Echo and I could be lying in the grass together, exhausted from levitating in the clouds. Or I could be slaying a dragon to protect her. Well, that was silly. A dragon was a creature of fire, and I would never harm it.

Also, Echo was unquestionably stronger in magic than I was. She’d be the one doing the slaying of anything, and I thought that was pretty cool.

She thought I was just blowing smoke at her when I said that I could feel her abilities growing these days. But I wasn’t. The woman was like a tea kettle at this very moment, her magical skills bubbling up until they were just about to push through the lid. It was so just about to happen.

Which was good, because the school was so screwed right now, that if something didn’t change, we were all in trouble.

As she left the room, she kept her eyes down. I had to call her name to get her to even see me. I loved the way my mouth felt when I said her name. The bond between us acted on me even when it came to something as small as that.

“Echo, that’s not like you,” I said reprovingly. “Usually, you can feel our connection from half the castle away. How did you not know that I was waiting for you?”

“I don’t know,” she murmured miserably. She looked like she was about to cry. “I can’t explain what’s happening with me. I’m turning into a moron for some reason.”

“Hey now, don’t be so hard on yourself. There’s just a lot of strain for everybody right now.” I looked more closely at her. She did look a little like the zombie second cousin I’d once met at a big family reunion. But there was no way I was going to say that out loud. Then, I understood.
